Green New Deal for Massachusetts Now

Sponsored by Justin Klekota, Councilor Katjana Ballantyne, Katie Wallace, and Antoinette Whitmore

(incorporated into official MassDems 2019 “Support of a Green New Deal” Resolution and endorsed by State Party)

WHEREAS the reality of climate change poses grave threats to our environment, public health, economy, and national security, and

WHEREAS climate change is directly caused by excessive carbon dioxide emissions attributable to consumption of fossil fuels, and

WHEREAS immediate action is required to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Massachusetts in concert with global efforts through the Paris Agreement by 55% in 2030, by 95% in 2045, and to carbon neutral in 2050 or sooner,

RESOLVED THE 2019 MASSACHUSETTS DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION delegates call upon our State Government to pass into law these bills to immediately begin reducing Massachusetts carbon dioxide emissions leveraging existing technologies:

H832/H3983, Meschino, An Act to create a 2050 roadmap to a clean and thriving commonwealth, which defines carbon dioxide emission reduction benchmarks and accountability to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,

H778, Fernandes, An Act relative to carbon pricing; H2810, Benson, An Act to promote green infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions; and S1924, Barrett, An Act to combat climate change, which set a carbon price on fossil fuel power plants, transportation, and home heating fuels in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and fund green municipal investment,

H2872, Barber & Hecht, An Act to promote the transition to clean transportation fleets; and S1927, Boncore, An Act to promote zero-emission vehicle fleets by 2035, which require commercial fleets and state vehicles to transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035,

H3629, Golden, An Act relative to the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles, which provides rebates to offset the cost of hybrid and electric vehicle purchases and reduced electric rates for charging,

And lastly, we call upon our federal, nationwide, and other global governments to take similar, immediate action.
